If you desire exciting growth opportunities and a chance to make a difference, a career in cybersecurity could be the answer. The cyber field isn’t just another branch of IT—it’s the backbone of our technological world—and an industry that’s quickly growing. According to ISC2 Cybersecurity Workforce, the world’s leading nonprofit member organization of cybersecurity professionals, 2024 resulted in a record-high global shortage in the cybersecurity workforce. In fact, an estimated 4.8 million jobs to defend and protect organizations across many industries remained unfilled at the close of last year.
While the demand for cybersecurity professionals rises, understanding how to break into the market can be an entirely different situation.
Understand Your Path
The cybersecurity field is immense and diverse. Therefore, it is essential to understand the critical infrastructure sectors that rely heavily on security frameworks to maintain a robust cybersecurity posture. These public and private sectors include and are not limited to:
- Government and Defense
- Financial Services
- Healthcare
- Transportation systems
- Industrial
- Food and Agriculture
- Water, Energy, and Chemical
Understanding each sector and roles that are right for your skillset are important. Whether you’re looking into being a Software Security Engineer, Cybersecurity Analyst, or another cyber-related role, each one calls for a deep understanding of security principles and the ability to take an analytical approach to thwart cyber threats. Do your homework to understand the landscape and identify your interests to narrow down your options.
Get Certified to Advance Your Career
While a traditional degree can be valuable, it is not the only path. If you possess a combination of technical knowledge, practical experience, industry certifications, and have attended professional webinars, these can work in your favor.
For example, obtaining the right certification is a great way to advance. Not only does it prove that you have undergone rigorous training to become an expert, it also demonstrates your commitment to continuous learning. In addition to Public Trust clearance, the most valued certifications in 2025 for cybersecurity include:
- CompTIA Security+
- Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
- Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH)
- Certified Information Security Manager (CISM)
- Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA)
- Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC)
- GIAC Security Essentials (GSEC)
- Certified Cloud Security Professional (CCSP)
- Cisco Certified CyberOps Associate
- Certified Penetration Testing Engineer (CPTE)
It is important to note that the field of cybersecurity evolves quickly. What is considered innovative today, might be outdated tomorrow. It’s why continuous learning isn’t just recommended, it’s essential.
Build Your Professional Network
You know the saying, “It’s not what you know but who you know.” While the expression may be trite, research shows that professional networks lead to more employment and business opportunities. In fact, around 85% of jobs are filled through networking.
Where do you start? Begin by connecting with industry professionals through LinkedIn, participate in local cybersecurity conferences and events, and take advantage of cybersecurity related forums like Reddit (i.e. r/cybersecurity!). A lot of helpful information can be gained from talking with people already working in the field and learning which companies offer the most potential.
Create a Strong Personal Brand
To differentiate yourself from others and establish your value, it is not enough to just have a good reputation among people you know. You need to have a strong digital brand or presence that represents how you want recruiters to perceive you. According to a recent study, a jobseeker’s digital footprint plays a critical role in hiring decisions. Meaning, potential employers are already researching you before you even know about their existence.
Creating a strong digital presence can include but is not limited to the following:
- Maintain an active and robust LinkedIn profile
- Contribute to open-source projects
- Build a GitHub portfolio
- Start a cybersecurity blog
The Human Element
Technical skills might get you in the door, but to advance in your career, you also need soft skills. So, take the time to learn how to be an effective communicator. While concepts like Network Cloud Infrastructure or Cyber Threat Hunting may seem obvious to you, they may not be for others, especially recruiters. When explaining core technical details to non-technical individuals, never assume they are subject matter experts. First ask if they are familiar with the topic, then tailor your explanations accordingly.
In addition to communication, focus on improving your problem-solving abilities, team collaboration, time management, and project management skills. All of these will remain important throughout your career.
Enjoy the Process of Self Discovery
Remember, cybersecurity isn’t just a career—it is a journey. And discovering a fresh new career path can be exciting. Cyber defenders in the Department of Defense (DoD) space face more challenges than ever. With cyberattacks increasing by 75% in the third quarter of 2024, the field needs passionate professionals more than ever. Making a difference and safeguarding your community’s networks and critical infrastructure could be the career path you’ve always wanted.
